Empathy
The core component of therapy is empathy. As we are complex individuals, living complicated lives, the best way for me to empathize with you is to listen to you. To hear you. To try and understand how your life is being impacted by whatever you are going through.
Connection
That said, I believe that connection is best established when there is a two-way road in terms of honest communication. In other words, I’m a fan of mutual conversation, of hearing about others and and of sharing about myself. And I really appreciate being told if something I’ve said sounds like BS. If we can share with each other, and be honest with each other, that sense of connection will drive the work that we do together.
Support
Life can be pretty challenging with all the many different things we have going on in our lives. Therefore, it’s important that I find out how best to support you with where you are at on the days we see each other. Since life is constantly moving, the support you need one day may be different than the support you need another day. It’s my job to work with you to identify what support you need when we meet, and to adjust our work together accordingly.
